nutrition

While working for 24 Hour Fitness I completed their Personal Trainer Certification Course. In addition, I completed Tony Robbin's 1-year Mastery University curriculum, a large portion of which was peak performance nutritional coaching about supplement usage, blood work, and super foods used for acid/alkaline balances. Finally, as an athlete and performer for 25 years, I have decades of wisdom about using nutrition to optimize energy and improve recovery time after strenuous periods of work.

fitness

While working for a fitness company, I completed their Personal Trainer certification. I successfully completed a Body-For-Life body building competition and I have participated in almost every kind of fitness activity: ranging from p90x to Pilates, from yoga to weight training, from circuit training to crossfit, from martial arts and parkour based fitness routines to spin classes. I can design a customized plyometric or body weight based routine or I can integrate various fitness equipment such as balls, balancing, kettle balls, sporting equipment, or bands.

social studies

I have a PhD from a transdisciplinary social sciences degree program that required and also instilled a wide variety of knowledge in various social sciences disciplines. My professional experience as a stage actor has exposed me to a vast amount of social and culture knowledge as necessary research for each character and play. Finally, my passion for contextualization of knowledge in a social framework helps my students to think in an integrative fashion.

ISEE

theatre

I am extremely qualified to teach anything to do with theatre. I did a BFA and MFA degree, both in theatre and acting. The BFA was a top 20 school and the MFA was a top five school. I have more than 5 years of professional experience as an actor in theatre, TV, and Film in various markets (LA, San Francisco, and Denver) My PhD research was an exploration of various acting pedagogies from around the world. Frankly, I am in the top 1% of people in this field in terms of my qualifications to teach theatre and acting.

CBEST

I took and passed the CBEST back in 2002. In addition I have tutored various SAT subjects which more than qualifies me to handle the material on the CBEST exam. Also, I have PhD in from an interdisciplinary social sciences program which gives me a high level of understanding of a very broad span of general knowledge.

study skills

While I got my PhD in transformative studies, I studied accelerated learning techniques in detail. In addition, I worked for success coach Tony Robbins for two years, and not only completed his one year 'Mastery University' training program, but I also worked for him as a corporate trainer, teaching success skills in fortune 500 companies. Finally, as an SAT tutor, I gave students ivy league college level study skills as applied to SAT test prep.

phonics

In addition to being a PhD level reader, I also have extensive training and experience as a stage actor which means that I have incredibly specialized tools for dealing with the spoken word and the sounds of speech. Finally, since I began life with dyslexia and various speech impediments that required focused attention, I have a special understanding of what exactly it takes to overcome any challenge in learning phonics.

English

Most of my academic life has been steeped in the study of literature and writing. I have two degrees in theater - wherein I study a wide range of literature and dramatic literature. I also had an English minor wherein I studied world literature and poetry. I also did an interdisciplinary PhD which involved a lot of writing and a broad reading of humanities and social sciences - which strengthened my language skills, general knowledge, and writing techniques. In addition, I have been a top writing and reading teacher at one of LA's biggest tutoring and test prep companies for the past 5 years.

government & politics

psychology

My deep knowledge in psychology comes primarily from my PhD studies. I studied 'peak performance' techniques that drew on an integrative approach to psychological approaches to human excellence.

SAT math

literature

I graduated with a minor in English as an undergraduate - where I read world literature (European, American, Caribbean, Russian, African, and more) extensively. I also have a undergrad and graduate degree in theater - so have been steeped in dramatic literature of all kinds. Finally, I have been an avid reader of great literature all my life. For example, in the last two years I have finished War and Peace, the entire bible, and The Brothers Karamazov. I am now working on the modern masterpiece Infinite Jest. Next up is Don Quixote. This kind of reading schedule has been common since I graduate college 15 years ago.

reading

I have taught reading a just about every level. I have taught grade school students reading basic reading comprehension skills to prepare for the ISEE entrance exam, I have taught high school students critical reading skills for the SAT as a teacher at top LA based SAT prep companies, and I have taught at the PhD level - helping students comprehend some of the the most complex and difficult philosophical and scientific materials in existence. Finally, with an English minor and two degrees in theater - I have great ability to help students read and understand poems, short stories, novels, and plays.

writing

grammar

Having completed a PhD, I have done a lot of reading and writing in my life. Editing graduate level papers has allowed me to cultivate exceptionally high levels of skill with laws of grammar, usage, and mechanics. I also have been teaching the 'writing' portion of SAT for the past five years - which is based almost entirely on grammar skills: the ability to spot errors and make sentence or paragraph corrections.

European history

I passed the AP European History test in High School with a high 4. In addition, I have a PhD in a transdisciplinary degree that required a very wide knowledge base including studying European history through the lens of social development theories like Spiral Dynamics. Finally, I also studied European drama and art extensively as part of my Master's degree in Classical Theatre which required me to have a high understanding of the historical context in which the work was created.

vocabulary

Because of the unique panoply of my life experiences - including decades of working in live theatre, a comprehensive study of English and world literature (including having read the entire Shakespearean cannon), a penchant for listening to and recording a staggering array of college level audio text books, and having completed a PhD level study in a transdiciplinary social sciences degree program - I have acquired a vast vocabulary arsenal. It would be a plum pleasing privilege and a pleasure to share my lifelong etymological and linguistic fascinations with whomever might be in need of verbal edification.

algebra 1

American history

I received a PhD in a transdisciplinary social sciences degree which required a wide berth of knowledge in the humanities generally, including a lot of American History as the context for which our research took place. I also took and passed the AP American History test back in High School and continue to read widely at a PhD level in American culture and history.

career development

I have wide understanding of how people choose, develop, or transition between careers. As a trainer and coach for the Anthony Robbins Companies (one of the most respected corporate training and coaching companies in the world) I helped people of all ages envision and then enact their ideal work lives. In addition, my exposure to a wide variety of work transition skills (which I acquired while working as a professional actor) led me to mastery of the tools in the career development classic "What Color is Your Parachute". In addition, I have a rare skill set related to using social media and the internet to optimize a job search process.

classics

I completed most of a philosophy minor in college which included extensive reading of Aristotle's "Poetics" and Plato's various Dialogues, and Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations", and St. Augustine's "Confessions", among others. In addition, in my undergraduate and graduate study of theatre, I learned about the Greek and Roman drama through both performance and through background academic research.

James helped our daughter prepare for the ISEE for entrance into private middle school. She had very little time to prepare for this exam because of our late decision to apply to private school. James came in one morning and spent a few hours with our daughter. He provided thoughtful, concise tips on each section. Our daughter really responded to him and was able to improve her scores greatly within one short week. She faired above average on every section of the exam, which was a great improvement over her practice exams. James was also very easy to schedule and responsive to us in a tight deadline situation. We are very happy we called on him and would absolutely use him again.

Rachel S. from La Canada Flintridge, CA

James is doing a wonderful job preparing my 11 year-old for the ISEE. He's a terrific all-around teacher; patient, kind, and, most important, he knows exactly how to organize my son's studies/independent work to put him in the best position to do well on the upcoming entrance exam. James is a find, would recommend him to anyone looking for a very bright, easy to work with, excellent tutor!

Daisy M. from Lawndale, CA

James is very helpful, especially on short time notice. I am taking the SSAT within 2-2.5 weeks, and I have had James as my tutor for 2 sessions. He is a great tutor. He really understands what I need the most help in and what is needed to work on in a short time. His method of working by testing and reviewing the wrong answer is a lot more helpful than just working on the book. He's very helpful and patient, and he was the only one who was willing to help me study for my SSAT test.

Megan C. from Pacific Palisades, CA

James was fabulous. He showed up at our first session well prepared and ready to jump in. He immediately put our 10 year old son at ease and has him started on a great program. We are so happy we are committing to 12 weeks to continue his prep for ISEE in December. Highly pleased with James.

Steve B. from Culver City, CA

James, after working with my son for only a short while, has instilled in him a new found sense of self-confidence. James's approach has an authentic way of acknowledging the work done, which then makes any corrective feedback more readily receivable. He is prepared, on time, and willing to work with you.

Yana L. from San Francisco, CA

James is great in helping my son academically and personally as his mentor succeed in various subjects and in high school preparation and admission process. Great guy!

Dan L. from Los Angeles, CA

James was an amazing tutor. He only had about three months to turn things around for our son who was scoring very low on his practice tests. We didn't really understand why his scores were so low given his normal abilities so we hired James. James made some assessments, had him focus on daily online vocabulary building and daily math building. Happy to say that my son's scores improved dramatically and his final test scores were much higher. Would definitely recommend James!

Ben H. from Chicago, IL

James goes beyond as a tutor to the point where you can really tell he actually cares about the end result for the child. He follows through and you can tell he has his own internal standards that says he wants to make sure you get what you paid for. I have used WyzAnt for a year now and he is THE best tutor we have had. My son said he has taught him more than any teacher (and we go to a great private school) or tutor ever has. Thank you for being the type of tutor that just goes the extra step.

Jo I. from Berkeley, CA

I schedule a one-off lesson with James for my son who thought there was "NO REASON" to talk to anyone at all before his ISEE test. Yet he spoke with James for 90 minutes and thought it was really helpful and he had great pointers. Thanks James. We'll let you know how it goes next week!

Arminda M. from Dallas, TX

James was really patient when we encountered technical difficulties with the audio and then once again with our internet connection (on my end). He helped make the best use of our time while we got back up online. He introduced us to some helpful sites and walked us through some ways to dissect of our upcoming ISEE test.

David S. from Cathedral City, CA

Aside from being a very gifted teacher, James has a degree of patience and empathy that is extraordinary in this field. I cannot recommend him highly enough. I wish every teacher had those qualities.
